Renewable energy from pruning wood

Lelystad is enriched with a bioenergy heating plant. This is not just a bioenergy plant. It is the best of the Netherlands when it comes to CEO Rene Buwalda of Primco, part of investment company Momentum Capital. HoSt turn-key supplied the wood-fired installation in October 2018. Since then, the performance exceeds expectations.

“I believe in a well balanced mix of alternative and cleaner energy sources to ensure a technical and economical feasible energy conversion, which leads to a more and more energy independence of the Netherlands”, says Buwalda. Annually, 21,000 tonnes of wood waste (prunings), originating from necessary forest maintenance in the area, is combusted and converted into heat for the district heating network.

Reliable heat supply

No fewer than 5,000 homes and 6 large energy consumers in Lelystad are now independent of natural gas. And when the heat demand suddenly increases, more renewable heat can be supplied immediately and briefly thanks to the heat buffers. Buwalda: “Weather conditions are becoming increasingly unpredictable and boisterous and lead to more and higher expectations of an installation at any level. This installation performs optimally and consistently under all weather conditions. Together with HoSt, we make the impossible possible and therefore I dare to say that we have the best biomass energy installation of the Netherlands”.

Por encima de las expectativas

El equipo de expertos de HoSt y Buwalda se pusieron en contacto y lograron llevar a cabo un corto período de construcción y una rápida puesta en marcha. Se decidió no seguir el papel tradicional de empleador-empleado o contratista-cliente y, como resultado, el proyecto se desarrolló sin problemas y rápidamente. Esto nos permitió estrenarlo ya en octubre, menos de seis meses después del inicio de la construcción. El funcionamiento con carga baja es beneficioso

El hecho de poder operar en condiciones de baja carga es beneficioso tanto para la calefacción urbana de Lelystad como para el modelo de negocio de Primco, un inversor que apuesta por varias instalaciones de energía renovable. Si la instalación tiene una capacidad máxima de 15 MWt en total, el funcionamiento con carga reducida no supone ningún problema. La instalación incluye dos calderas, hornos y alimentadores idénticos. Cada caldera es capaz de funcionar independientemente de la otra e incluso con un 30 % de carga parcial. Como resultado, en los meses más cálidos una caldera produce 2,5 MWt en lugar de cero. «Nos preocupamos por nuestros grupos de interés, por lo que es muy atractivo que podamos producir calor incluso en los meses de verano. La instalación ha sido posible en parte gracias a nuestros grupos de interés», afirma Buwalda.


Anualmente, se queman 21 000 toneladas de residuos de madera (podas), procedentes del mantenimiento forestal necesario en la zona, y se convierten en calor para la red de calefacción urbana.

El calor se suministrará, a través de la red de calefacción urbana, a unos 5000 pequeños consumidores y 6 grandes consumidores de energía.


Gracias al filtro de mangas y a la amplia tecnología de limpieza (inyección de urea), la instalación ha conseguido reducir las emisiones de polvo y dióxido de nitrógeno (polvo: <5mg/Nmsup3/sup y NOsubx/sub: 145/Nmsup3/sup).
